How a new asphalt driveway should be installed

  • Excavate the base to a 14”depth to your finished sub grade. The sub grade is the soil left once the excavation is complete.

  • Compact the sub grade well because the excavation process loosens some of the sub grade and it is important to compact it prior to placing your stone base.

  • When you are compacting the granular base the rule of thumb is if the stones are splitting and pulverizing under the compaction machine you are hitting close to 100% compaction.

  • Some contractors may leave your driveway for several weeks before paving due to excessive water in the base. Letting the excessive water dry out is the right thing to do.  If there is too much water in the base it is not possible to achieve compaction.  If you try to pave over a wet base there is a good chance that the asphalt will crack while being rolled after placement.

  • The granular base should be sloped and now ready to receive 2” of Asphalt.

  • The slope should be 2% or more in order for water to move in the desired direction.

  • Slope can be measured at 2” of fall over 10’. Therefore if the driveway is 40’ long, there should be a difference of 8” from top and bottom of slope.

  • Asphalt can now be placed.

  • HL3A is good asphalt for a residential driveway. It has a little more sand in it and will finish very nicely.

  • The “3” in “HL3A” stands for 3mm stone. The “A” means there is additional sand for a finer finish.

  •  Mechanical placement with a paving spreader is the best method as it screeds the asphalt bringing the finer material to the top leaving a finer finish. All asphalt needs to be raked but the less you need to rake the better the finish.

  • If you have curbs or an interlock border the asphalt can be placed up along the border.

  • If there is no border the asphalt edge should be tamped on a 45 degree angle.

  • Once the asphalt is laid it needs to be rolled and compacted. Double drum rollers and plate compactors should be used until all the lines are removed from the asphalt during compaction.

  • Your driveway is now complete.

  • A good contractor will place caution tape at the base of driveway so that vehicles do not drive on newly placed asphalt.

  • You should stay off your driveway for a few days if possible or you can drive straight in and park in the garage.

  • You must not dry turn your vehicles tires on the new asphalt for several weeks after it has been laid as it is not cured. Dry turning on a new driveway can damage the asphalt. Full curing may take several months.

  • Your new driveway does not need to be sealed. Sealing can be done in following years and is only for esthetic value.
